"The Winter Solstice is the time of ending and beginning, a powerful time - a time to contemplate your immortality. A time to forgive, to be forgiven, and to make a fresh start."
- Frederick Lenz
The Winter Solstice begins the moment the sun enters the tropical sign of Capricorn, and this year it happens on Tuesday December 21st at 10:58 am EST.
During the Solstice the sun appears to stand still in the sky. It is a deep and nourishing reminder that time moves by us at a breakneck speed (especially now), and that being still, even for a moment, can renew, reinvigorate, and revive our future moments.
I usually try to make these sort of "it's time to do a ritual" blogs as easy as possible, as I want to encourage you to do them. And yet at the same time, for this particular one I must emphasize, if you only do one ritual this year, this is the one!
The Winter Solstice is a POWERFUL and auspicious moment in time. You don't have to do the ritual at the exact moment it happens, in fact you may find the darkness of Tuesday evening far more potent. Either way, here's the deal...
This seasonal pivot has a natural power that we can tap into and harness. The light shifts subtly from dimming to brightening. As you know, we can't come out of the darkness too quickly or we will be blinded. The earth's beautiful, natural, metronomic rhythms help us to understand the beauty of slow, deliberate processing. We are after all, just stardust ourselves. Our DNA is intertwined with the earth, the sky, and its changes.
Winter Solstice is a moment where, if we take it, we get to unfold ourselves, we get to bear witness to both the turning of the earth and own our lives. It is a powerful time to set Intentions, plant the seeds that will be nurtured underground in the winter and will bloom with full force by the spring.
The Winter Solstice ritual is a time to honor the sun, its light, and how to bring it back to us. This ritual should involve any sacred light source—such as a candle, a flame, a fire, a lantern, a salt lamp, a lighter. This is a moment to harness, focus, and direct not only the sun's energy, but your own.
It's pretty simple. Light your candle in the darkness (or the light depending on your ritual time choice) and declare your Intentions for 2022. Some people write them down and burn them; some only write them down; some shout them from the rooftops; some whisper them internally. Do whatever makes you feel the most decisive and powerful.
The hard part is figuring out what those Intentions should be. So here are some questions you can ask yourself to arrive at your ritual destination. These can be fun questions to ask a friend, answer with a group of people, or simply write out for yourself privately. Just do it! Make time for it! It's important! You cannot create the life of your dreams if you don't invest in the creation part.
- How do I want to feel about... my work, my relationships, my body, my spiritual journey, myself?
- What old belief or pattern do I want to let go of?
- What do I want to do for myself that I'm not doing now?
- What do I need to embrace about myself to get to the next level?
- How can I be less of a victim of my circumstances and more of a hero?
- Where do I need to become more sensitive?
- Where do I need to become less sensitive?
- Where is my growth edge and how can I get myself there on a regular basis?
You can stop at the first question if you have answers. How you want to feel and what you want to experience are the two anchor points in the Intention setting process. The other questions are there to spark more thought and help you create specifics for you to focus on to arrive at how you want to feel and what you want to experience.
There is no question we are stepping into a different kind of world. There is also no question you have the power in managing the kind of experience you have in this world. It is a time of great unknown and darkness, and therefore a time of great promise and the possibility of great light. We ask that you give yourself the time to contemplate and to honor your journey thus far to set the groundwork for your next trip.
And we promise you this, if you seek the light, you will find it.
We're rooting for you!
