Black Sunstone FAQs

Is Black Sunstone natural or man made?

Black Sunstone is 100% natural and only comes from Southern India. It's a new discovery and not readily available world wide. Further research is being done because the mineral components of this Southern Indian deposit is complicated. Currently it is still being labeled Black Sunstone. A similar stone that may be confused with Black Sunstone is a dark Goldstone, which is manmade with glass and copper. Black Sunstone comes in many colors from a deep red-brown to an almost opaque black. It is distinguished by a sparkly appearance due to hematite inclusions.

How can you tell if Black Sunstone is real?

Any natural stone, like Black Sunstone, will have both surface and color differences, so if the stone you are looking at has no inclusions (small cuts in the surface) and 100% consistency in color, it's most likely man made. A man made stone often confused with Black Sunstone is Goldstone, which is made of glass with copper inclusions.

Can Black Sunstone be in the sun?

Yes! A Black Sunstone can be in the sun. In fact, it's GREAT to use the sun as a cleanser and recharger for Black Sunstone. However, as with most gemstones, you don't want to store them in direct sunlight. Give it a nice sun bath every once in a while but store it in a cool, dry place.

How to cleanse Black Sunstone

Black Sunstone can be cleansed by burning a bit of sage, sweet grass, or another healing herb underneath it while you hold the crystal in your hand—allowing the smoke to wash over the crystal. It can also be gently washed in mild soapy water. You can also use a Selenite cleansing plate. Place the stone on the plate for 24 hours and it will clear random energies from the stone. Do not clean it in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, as Black Sunstone is a fairly soft stone and can be damaged by high powered cleaners.

How to charge Black Sunstone

Black Sunstone loves to be charged in the sunshine. Place it in a window that gets direct sunlight and leave it there for no more than three hours. It will absorb the frequency of the sun and then be ready to go back to work!
