In Sanskrit the word "chakra" translates to "wheel." This invisible life force or energy helps to keep us vibrant, healthy, and alive. There are 7 Chakras that span the length of the spine, each associated with a specific color and controls specific energies in our bodies.
When energy is trapped in the body, it leads to stagnation. That could be a stagnation of forward momentum in your life, or a stagnation of evolution—or at its worst can become a toxic stagnation that may lead to disease in the body. This is why it's important to be aware of where you tend to hold and feel things in your body.
There is so much to learn, but at a basic level, if you can get clear about what is troubling you by looking at thought patterns and physical symptoms, you can then match it to the corresponding Chakra energy system. You can then pick gemstones based on the Chakra colors to help release and clear blockages in that energy center.
Our Chakra blog series will help you work with your body to clear blockages with focused thought, mantras, and crystals.
Where & What Is The Root Chakra?
The Root Chakra, also known as Muladhara (which means "root" in Sanskrit), radiates the color red. It's associated with the earth and located at the base of your spine, in your pelvic region at the perineum. This location signifies its link between the physical earth world and our internal energetic system.
Your Root Chakra provides you with a foundation for life, helps you feel grounded and able to withstand challenges, is responsible for your sense of security and stability, and is related to basic survival.
Balancing the Root Chakra creates a solid foundation for living and for opening the other six chakras. When balanced, a person experiences stability, confidence, energy, and strength.
When out of balance you may experience some of the following symptoms: anxiety, insecurity, lack of ambition, lethargy, panic attacks, overeating, digestive disorders, aches and pains in the lower abdomen or pelvis, reproductive issues, insomnia or over sleeping, hoarding of material items, a greed for money, disconnection, isolation, and self pity.

Choose a crystal that pops out to you or simply feels right. You can also ask your Root Chakra what it needs to heal. Once you have your crystal, which can be a crystal specimen or piece of jewelry, meditate with it. Go to a quiet place, sit cross legged if possible, allowing for your Root Chakra to be as close to the earth as you can, close your eyes, and breathe. Imagine light radiating from your crystal to your Root Chakra. Imagine the vibration and energy from the earth coming up to meet and support you.
